Shades of Death Road
Posted On April 11, 2015
April’s here, and it’s time to blow the dust off the bikes. We’re going to go for three today.
Our first stop is at Shades of Death Road near Avella, PA. It’s a great spot for a photo op. I’ve driven the road in my WRX. Pavement ends not far from where we took these pics, and it gets steep and twisty. I wouldn’t want to ride it. Well, maybe on a dirt bike. Preferably someone else’s.

This was, I think, the first ride of any length I took on Absinthe. I’d had it a week or two by the time we took this ride, but hadn’t done more than ride the roads around Beaver Falls and commute to work a couple times. Too cold. It wasn’t extra special warm when we road this day, either, but heated handgrips make an enormous difference. I still had fun. On the old Iron Horse, discomfort would have interfered with enjoying the ride.
